America = Opportunity

It seems scary to immigrate to another country. A new country, language, customs, friends, problems, jobs, and school can be quite daunting to someone that's never been to America before. The immigrants must have been excited to go to "The Land of Opportunity". It was thought that in America you can be anyone you want to be if you set your mind to it. Many people saw America as a holy land that was rich and abundant. Ellis Island created an illusion that money would grow on trees in America. Once new arrivals entered New York City and other American cities, they were in for quite the surprise. Low-paying, back-breaking work was all the immigrants could get. Small apartments, cold New York winters, no heat, and no sewage were the things immigrants dealt with for the golden opportunity to come to America. Even though life seemed grim for these new Americans, Carnegie came to the U.S. as an immigrant and became one of the richest men of his time. Opportunities would definitely get  better as more immigrants became more comfortable with their new lives.
